The Nanni 5.280 HE engine has been discontinued. The recommended replacement from Nanni’s lineup is the N4.65, a 4-cylinder engine. While this is a suitable alternative, it does require a few installation modifications due to differences in configuration, which can be carried out by the team at A R Peachment
Engine Mounting
- Engine Bed Width:
The 5.280 HE uses a 5-cylinder block with engine foot centres at 490mm, whereas the N4.65 has centres at 410mm.
To resolve this:- Rear Mounts: You can send us the rear bell housing brackets from the 5.280 HE; we can clean, spray, and fit them on the N4.65 ready for installation. This retains the original rear mounting position, keeping the gearbox output coupling aligned with the propeller shaft.
- Front Mounts: To match the rear bed width, at A R Peachment we can fabricate 2 spacers for the front brackets by 40mm on each side.
The front mounts on the N4.65 sit 118mm further aft than on the 5.280 HE. How you address this depends on your engine-bed construction.- In many cases, it may be sufficient to redrill the beds further aft.
- Alternatively, adjust or relocate the mounting brackets as needed.
Exhaust System
- The 5.280 HE uses a 60mm exhaust hose, while the N4.65 requires a 76mm hose.
- The ideal solution is to replace the entire exhaust system, which we can supply at competitive prices.
- In some cases, a hose adaptor may be sufficient, but ensure exhaust back pressure remains within specification.
Cooling Water Intake
- Both engines use a 32mm raw water intake.
Only minor hose replacement is required.
Fuel System
- Both engines require 8mm fuel feed and return lines.
Simply replace with new hose and be sure to clean and replace the fuel pre-filter.
Electrical System
- The instrument panel and loom for the N4.65 are plug-and-play.
- If the existing panel is an A3 or C3, you may need a trim panel to fit the newer A4 or C4 panel format.
- The starter motor location is the same on both engines, so battery cable routing remains unchanged.
Calorifier Take-Offs
- If fitted, the calorifier (water heater) take-offs are in the same location on both engines. Only minor pipework changes should be needed.
